Millions of households are to receive a £100 payment to help with energy bills, news organisations reported. The payment is reportedly due to reach recipients from January.

According to reports, Chancellor John Healey announced the payment in his first budget as part of a package of measures intended to cut consumers' energy bills and ease the cost-of-living crisis. The chancellor reportedly said the £100 would go to 20m households whose homes fall in council tax bands A to D, and he put the measure's cost at £2.6bn.

The package is reportedly funded by a windfall tax on banks that was smaller than expected. Healey reportedly promised to guide Britain through a global economic storm.
