The US rating agency Fitch has downgraded its outlook for France, news organisations reported.

The agency reportedly left the French rating itself unchanged at A+ and shifted the outlook to negative from stable. Fitch reportedly predicted that debt in the EU's second-biggest economy would reach 124% of GDP in 2028.

The agency reportedly questions whether France can sustainably repair its public finances once the 2027 presidential election has passed, probably with parliamentary elections to follow.

The government, for its part, reportedly aims for a responsible 2027 budget and has again stressed that it sees adopting a budget before the end of the year as an absolute necessity.
